Wegovy has trialed a new 7.2mg dose that delivers similar weight loss to Mounjaro, while keeping treatment costs down.
Almost. Both Wegovy and Mounjaro work by targeting GLP-1 receptors, which help reduce appetite and cravings, leading to significant weight loss when used consistently alongside lifestyle changes.
Mounjaro has shown average weight loss of around 21.5% in clinical trials. However, newer clinical data from recent trials using Wegovy’s updated 7.2mg dosage also show an average weight loss of around 20.7%—putting it on par with Mounjaro in terms of effectiveness.
Wegovy and Mounjaro are very similar in how they work. Both are once-weekly injections that activate GLP-1 receptors to help reduce appetite and support weight loss. Because of this shared mechanism, they also have very similar side effect profiles.
Where they differ is in their active ingredients—Wegovy contains semaglutide (also used in Ozempic), while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide.
Wegovy has also been available longer, with a more established patient track record. It’s been studied in over 25,000 patients and used by more than 8 million people worldwide over the past 8 years.
Wegovy has been on the market longer—it was first approved in the U.S. in 2021, compared to Mounjaro’s 2023 approval. At Voy, Wegovy is offered at one of the most competitive prices in the UK, backed by clinical support and health coaching.
Wegovy is the only GLP-1 weight loss medication currently proven to reduce major cardiovascular risks. In a large SELECT trial involving over 17,000 participants, Wegovy reduced the risk of major adverse heart or cardiovascular events by 20%. Mounjaro has not yet shown this benefit in clinical trials.
Weight loss injections, more scientifically known as GLP-1 injections, are medications that target GLP-1 receptors and are clinically proven to support weight loss.
Though there are many different weight loss injections, they all tend to have a similar mechanism of action. They work by mimicking natural gut hormones, GLP-1, which help control appetite, hunger, and feelings of fullness. This helps reduce food cravings and noise, leading to weight loss.
While the effectiveness may vary depending on the weight loss injection, Wegovy and Mounjaro are both highly effective weight loss medications — and at higher doses, their results are remarkably close. Clinical trials show that people taking Mounjaro lost around 21.5% of their body weight on average. But Wegovy, especially at its 7.2mg dose, comes very close — with users losing an average of 20.7% over 72 weeks. Around one in three people on 7.2mg of Wegovy lost 25% or more of their body weight.
That’s why Voy offers early access to the 7.2mg Wegovy dose, so you can achieve clinically comparable results to Mounjaro, but at a lower cost.
There are three weight loss injections licensed by the government’s MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) for weight loss and the treatment of obesity: Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Saxenda. Mounjaro is currently being trialed by the NHS for a select group of participants with a BMI over 40 and three separate health conditions.
Because weight loss injections contribute to weight loss, the long-term effects of the medication are largely positive, as they can help you lead a healthier lifestyle. Some of the long-term effects include:
Before using weight loss injections, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects and precautions. Rest assured, any side effects are usually mild and tend to occur when you first start the medication or increase your dose, as your body adjusts to it.

At Voy, you can contact a prescribing clinician at any time to address any side effects that may arise.
Many people feel reduced appetite in weeks and see noticeable weight loss, typically 2-3kg, in the first month. Full effects build over 12 weeks, kickstarting your weight loss journey.
We offer only medications that are licensed for weight loss. However, we do offer Wegovy to eligible patients, which is manufactured by the same company, Novo Nordisk, and uses the same active ingredient, semaglutide, to suppress appetite. Wegovy is licensed for treating obesity in the UK and offers higher dosages of 1.7mg, 2.4mg and 7.2mg of semaglutide, compared to Ozempic’s 1mg. The higher dosage supports greater weight loss.
